Sad news indeed. Let's just hope Smash comes back soon, or that they are gone for a good, unknown reason.
You had me worried there for a moment! Before clicking the cut, I was thinking that Hajime Kanzaka died or something! It is unfortunate to hear he'll not be working on Slayers for a while, but all things considered, he deserves a bit of a break. I'm curious what the new project is, hopefully whatever it is will be worth whatever space of time he's not working on the Slayers Smash novels.
I understand completely if Hajime Kanzaka is getting burned out on Slayers. He's been writing it for a long time. So I'm not upset or anything.
I'm not sad! He really deserves the break.
I hope all goes well for him. I had thought for a while that maybe he should either wind down or stop making the Slayers Smash books completely. If you think about it, how many possible adventures could Lina have with Naga in a two-year timespan, covered by over thirty novels, compared to the four years she spends with Gourry, Zel, and Amelia in only fifteen? It boggles the mind. If you want to live your life to the fullest, just hang out with the looney sorceress/princess with a bust that looks like it was glued onto her! XD.
Most of his non-Slayers projects flopped (Lost Universe ended abruptly, mind you), so let's all spread our arms out in praise for him :)
I have to admit that, like misseternal
, I was starting to wonder how long he could drag out Lina and Naga's adventures, and not necessarily in a good way. Like "does he really still want to write these, or is he writing them just because he's got a contract?" While I still do hope that the new project is something
Slayers-related, I would also not blame him at all if he was just burnt out on it and wanted to try something new, and I'd try to give it a chance if he did.
...also, uh, replying to my own comment because I haven't got a paid account and can't edit it: I was never too excited about Slayers Smash to begin with, since it seemed like it was bound from the start to never see any kind of English release, after how Tokyopop (mis)handled the original novels. I admit that at this point, as a Slayers fan, the biggest thing I'm holding out hope for is that someone will finally take it on themselves, as a fan project, to translate/edit novels 10-15. That's really been the single biggest thing I've wanted to see, more than new material-- I'm just not as interested in the Lina and Naga stories, I guess, as I am in the (chronologically) later adventures and character interactions.
I feel the same. I found many of Lina and Naga's later adventures (their earlier ones were good, a given because the very first was planted in the middle of the anime's first season, the story of Phil and Randy) to be rather boring and unfunny. Unfortunately, Kanzaka stated already that he has no intention to continue the "main" series. Novel 9 got fan translated, but the one person who did it probably won't continue.
Just a factual blurb, but from what I've seen, Tokyopop was never a good translating company in the first place, given that they mishandled most of their manga in various ways. Most of the novels that they translated had no promotion, so they stopped after one or two volumes (fortunate that Slayers had reached six before their first cancellation!)
Yeah, I have the fan translation of 9. It's a shame that the translator quit, because it was quite good-- I actually thought he(?) did a better job than the Tokyopop translator who did novels 3-6. There was just kind of a snarky edge to those adaptations that I didn't like, that didn't seem to exist in more direct translations.
I've seen a rough translation of novel 10-- I think it might have been done by QP/Diana, actually. But it was very rough, to the point where I couldn't always tell what was going on.
And... re Tokyopop, yeah, I actually did not know they were translating the Slayers novels for quite some time, because it was done with no promotion. They seem to have pretty much been plagued by bad business decisions from beginning to end, as a company, from what I've read. I'm glad we had the chance to get the first eight in any form, but they never really seemed to value Slayers very much-- they just seemed to want to get the rights to as many manga and novels as possible, and then seemed surprised when things they didn't advertise didn't sell well.
I want to be a person who participate in that translate project, but fortunately my english skill is not good, so maybe I can't. I eagerly hope that english, and european people also can read Slayers novel 10 -15. It's really fabulous, and I treat it most precious one which of All slayers series.
I'm so sad only korea has translation of slayers japanese novel. It is really needed to be translated on english. Tokyopop missed their wonderful chance.
If you would be truly willing, you could ask someone (I for one would volunteer) to work the "rough translation" you provide into a more easily readable form. The translation you sent me for the doujinshi some time ago, for instance, was perfect to understand what was going on even if it was not entirely valid English.
It can be done with some cooperation, but it's of course no small job by any means.
I'll always be here for helping on translations ! I'm not enough good for doing this, but I can send money with Paypal for a financial help.
Umm.. I think There would be more better one than me who can translate novel in a good way.(Like QPdianna?)
And it wasted so much time to translate, actually. So I have to make up my mind after my final-term exam. But i think I could do it sort of funny play. XD So I did some.
Fills all darkness of disappeared ruins.
I, and Gourry put out a feeler even holding own breath.
Time flies in the silence -
The Light, which I made its lightness very small, shallowed on my head.
When Strangeness came out was after short- and long time have already passed out.
Before I called his name,
Holding his swords, he turned back toward strangeness on a side of wall.
With a sharp shout, The sword sparkled!
It is the first part of novel 10, But I'm not sure it is exact way. It feels like I have to get a advice Japanese or English people. XXDDD Nah, It's only a simple test, you know.
It seems very good to me, we always can work better on words later.
But you know, 2/3 of the tenth novel was translated. It only missed the last part.
Ah, really? It sounds sad to me that last part was missed. ; _;
Could I find 2/3 of tenth novel translated in english?
Man, this would be harder than I thought. XD
Here's the same part, as translated by QP/Diana:
Silence filled the air in the darkness of the ruin that had fallen into decay.
Gourry and I were hiding, we almost stopped to breathe, and we tried hard to sense something.
Only time passed by in the silent place.
There was a light of magic hanging above our heads, which I had placed. And I felt as if the light slightly moved.
Was it several minutes or was it only a second? I didn't know-- but we did sense something!
Before I called for him, he turned around and faced to something came out of the wall, holding his sword in his hands.
With his sharp shout, the blow of blade glittered in the air.
You can find what she did of novel 10 here:http://homepage3.nifty.com/QPHOUSE/gensaku2/s_battle10005.html
Sadly, she has not updated her site since 2 years. With her having a family of her own, she is quite busy these days, so I would not count on her translating more of this.
Actually mine was simple and short. XXDD It seems she put more words to make story interesting, contrast to original novel.
I have to challenge for liberal translation... XD It makes my blood burning actually. LOL
But, in other aspect, I'm scared that I'll ruin this great novel cuz my boring translation. I want some people will help me. I'll bring new suggestion in a few days :9
It's okay. :) For a rough translation, the most important part is to stay as close to the original material as possible. It not a problem if it's "boring"; making it interesting while retaining its original meaning is just the next step.
I think the main problem is that your dictionary is suggesting inappropriate words for the context. For instance, here we have the first sentence:
"Fills all darkness of disappeared ruins."
Instead of "disappeared", I guess the right word would be "decayed" or "decaying", but you cannot tell because you have no choice but to trust your dictionary, and I cannot tell because the word sounds so out of place that I cannot guess what it is trying to mean.
For this reason, it might be worth using more words in the rough translation (for instance, putting in multiple possible translations for a word that you are not sure about), so the original meaning could come through. At least, that's an idea.
It seems I have to practice more with transcribing of QP/Diana's translation.
For this working I have to get advisers, too like you XD.
Ok, now another sample one. It is after part of QP/Diana's translation of Novel 10. :9 I hope some people send volunteer for this after read this rough translation. It need to be polished a lot!
“So it was... I see.."
After hearing my explanation,
Luke murmured in uncomfortable tone while tilted his glass.
Right after fighting with black men.
Me and Gourry packed our baggage having turned back to lodging, and departed from center of the town. We are now at another lodging at developing section, with Luke and Millina.
The town was ovehauled yet. It was really messy, with many houses built from edge of the town.
Several harsh and danger people were staying here. Might not the security system of center have the power on here.
But, that made me think it was really optimum place for hiding.
So, it was the reason why we moved our place to a pub which seems tattered, but not perfectly.
"Then it is certain that lord Langmeyer and black men are together."
I nodded moving salmon sandwith into my mouth, which was late-night meal.
"Son of bithch. He completely fooled us.."
Luke said bitterly, but Millina replied on a cold voice.
"Not us. Only YOU."
Millina.. T..Then you mean, you didn't believe lord Langmeyer?"
"I said it already that I hate a person who has a red hair."
H..Hey. That seems like a stereotype.
"But wasn't you who accepted that guard duty, right?"
I interfered with Luke and Millina's conversation.
Apparently, Luke said like that.
Wow, this translation is so much clearer than the previous one! I understand almost everything. :D
I need to head to bed now, but I'll take another look at it tomorrow to see how the prose can be improved.
Oops. I was reading through QP/Diana's translation to understand what's happening and this part was still in it. It is organized a bit strangely on her page, but if you click the "10." link on the "Slayers Battle" page, you can see what she translated from the parts between the fights. She finished her translation when this scene ended with Lina and the others deciding what to do.
Ok, I got it what was real part that I had to translate it.
I will translate about A4 2pages in everyday. When I fill 10 pages, I will attach it to you guy and get a revise.
This is next part of QP/Diana's.
Soraria's night was unusually swallowing.
It was natural to being noisy because of these disturbances which has continued almost 2 days.
Many spectators were crowded where we had fought. While Guards were busy for backing up those spectators and doing field investigation.
We were flying in the night sky seeing that scene.
Our destination was the shrine where me and Gourry had sneaked into. Past, and present was dissimilar, because personnel setup was different.
Above all, this is time for fight, not only for investigating like before.
Perhaps, there would be some important facilities in the basement. Like, facilities for making chimera of demon and human like Zord and Zain.
Our purpose was 'Destroy them perfectly'.
Of course, for coming out conclusion ealier, there was useful way like invading to the castle in this phase, binding up Lavas, making him confess everything and knocking down that bad guy.
Honestly, I had suggested that plan from the first time, but Millina protested to it,
It was certain that Lavas was most doubtful one as we could see through this situation, but we didn't have any crucial evidences, either.
Millina said that we could not recover everything on its position if Lavas was not a boss of this situation by any possibility.
Millina also rejected my opinion coldly when I said that I would pass those situations by saying 'Oh, It was my mistake♡ HoHoHo', in case Lavas was not a evil one.
That sounds awesome. :) I'd recommend pasting the translation into a Word document or something when you will get to 10 pages, as it is much easier to do revisions like that.
For what it's worth, if you guys want another person on board for this project, to do QC types of things (checking for typoes/clarity/flow of prose for English readers), I'd be willing to help out. The only thing I'd be a bit uneasy over is not having anyone who can read Japanese fluently (or fluently enough to understand light novels at least), to help out with clarifying what the original novels say if there's any ambiguity, and making sure there are no significant errors in the translation.
Unfortunately, I'm not in contact with anyone who could really help out in that department-- I know two people who've read the novels in Japanese, but I've been out of touch with one of them for some time now, and the other hasn't had a chance to practice their Japanese in several years so probably would not trust their reading skills as much as they once did. I'll let you know if I meet someone who has the skill and would be willing to help out, though.
I know how to read Japanese words, because Kanji of Korean and Japanese is pretty similar. But I don't have original one in my hand, I have only translation novel of Korean, volume 1~15. The crucial problem is I have hard time on doing translation because My enlgish is not enough to do translation ; _; So maybe the person who could translation Japanese into English is necessary for this working. I hope you find some. Anyway I attached link for sharing dacument of translation script, which I am working on with pip25.
I've sent you a message as well.
